Several accidents at railway gate crossings occur due to the impatience of crosser-by to wait for the train to cross the gate and decide to cross the track in spite of the gate being closed. Furthermore in an unmanned railway crossing without gates, the risk is much higher.
The lack of availability of data/instructions regarding the likelihood of the train to cross the railway gate from the time the gate is closed leads to this perilous situation. This can be avoided if the gate is closed, when the train is at a pre-defined distance from the gate, and the gate is opened, when the train crosses the same pre-defined distance after the gate.
The major objective involves designing an intelligent railway gate system, which acquires data from load cells and infrared sensors. The data acquired from the transducers initiates the micro controller to control the gate and alerts the crosser-by about the status of the train.
The system has been so designed such that the gate is closed when the train is at a pre-defined distance from the gate, and the gate is opened after the train crosses the same pre-defined distance after the gate.
In addition to monitoring the entire system through radio frequency, an innovative scheme which may aid is obviating the need for man-machine interface during the operation of the gate by providing remote control from the nearby system is proposed.
